FLYING - Original painting by Shirly Maimon

The Story Behind the Painting

In my studio, on a hot summer day, I began working on the painting “Birds of Freedom.”
I didn’t have a clear plan or a specific image in mind — I simply wanted to express a feeling.
A sense of release, flight, an escape from the noise and chaos around me.
As I started placing colors on the canvas, the lines began to resemble wings drifting in the wind.

The more I painted, the more I felt myself letting go.
The world outside the studio started to fade away, and it was just me and the canvas.
A feeling of complete freedom washed over me — as if the wings in the painting were also mine.

The image of birds began to emerge, but they weren’t realistic or defined.
They were symbolic — like emotions, thoughts, or hopes taking flight.
Each one represented something I needed to let go of, something that no longer served me.
Every brushstroke felt like another gust of wind, helping me release another piece of what I’d been holding inside.

This painting was a process of emotional release.
I didn’t paint birds to depict an animal — I painted them to represent freedom.
Freedom from what holds me back,
and the movement toward a place where I can finally fly.
