FRAMES - Original painting by Shirly Maimon

The Story Behind the Painting

When I approached this painting, I knew the concept of a “frame” would be at its core. It represents the boundaries we place around ourselves — those we’re aware of and those we only discover over time. The first color I chose was deep burgundy. It symbolizes passion, depth, and the restrained emotions that grow beneath the surface. It shaped the outlines, the frame within which everything else takes place.

In contrast, white entered the painting softly, almost as if asking to break through the frame and escape it. The white became a space where anything is possible, where the boundaries stretch — and sometimes even disappear. The tension between burgundy and white is the heart of the painting: a frame that builds and breaks itself, much like the soul navigating the limits we’ve set or those that reality has placed around us.

This painting speaks to the ongoing dialogue between the structures we live within and the desire to move beyond them. It tells the story of our inner forces — the depths that hold us and the quiet that longs to be released. Burgundy and white play opposing but complementary roles, reminding us that within every boundary, there’s space to break free, and in every breakthrough, there’s a moment to pause and reflect on what we’ve built.
