The Story Behind the Painting
“Step Back” was born from a simple understanding that has saved me again and again: not everything requires an immediate response. Sometimes the most accurate thing is to pause, breathe, and give myself a bit of distance before I answer. When we’re too close to what’s happening, we see only noise and crowded colors. When we step back half a step, the picture starts to settle.
While working on the painting, I noticed how much the body wants to hurry and fix. Every time my hand rushed, I chose to stop. I took a breath, stepped back a little, and the composition opened up. Lines that felt confused up close gained a clear direction from afar. Each layer became a short pause that brought back perspective. The textures hold the memory of the moments when I almost reacted immediately, and chose instead to create a small space before the next word.
The blue and turquoise tones here are transition—they remind me that life moves in waves. The white gives air, a place for the eyes to rest and for the heart to understand. Some areas are calm, some are stormy, and between them a small space appears—the place where choice is made. A space that helps me see what matters and what is just momentary noise.
“Step Back” reminds me to check the angle before I respond. Zooming in shows details; zooming out gives context. This painting invites us to practice the same in life: pause for a moment, take three breaths, pull the view back, ask what truly matters here, and then choose one small, clear action. A brief space can change the whole picture.
